Trench boxes: stay inside, get out when it moves

Why it matters
A trench box only protects you while you are inside it and it is set right. Workers get crushed when they stand past the open end, climb out over the outside, or stay in the box while the machine drags it forward.
The talk
A trench box, or shield, does not stop the walls from caving. It stops the dirt from reaching you. That only works if you stay between its walls. On a pipe job the box gets dragged ahead every few lengths. In between, people get lazy. They step out the open end to grab a fitting. They climb the outside of the box to get out. They sit on the spreader bar while the operator lifts and pulls. Each of those puts a body where the trench can still fall in.
Here is what the standard asks. The box can't be loaded past what it was designed for. It has to be set so it can't kick sideways if the wall pushes on it. Workers have to be protected from cave-in while getting into and out of the box, so use a ladder inside the box, not a climb up the outside. Nobody stays in the box while it is being put in, pulled out, or moved up and down. The bottom of the box can sit up to 2 feet above the trench floor, but only if the box is rated for the full depth and there is no sign of soil running out from under or behind it.
Make the move a routine. The operator calls it. Everyone climbs out by the ladder. The box moves. The competent person looks at the walls and the gap under the box before anyone goes back in. Watch the ends of the box. If the trench is open past the end, that part is not protected, so do not stand there to work on the pipe. Keep fittings and tools inside the box so nobody has to step out for them. If you see cracks at the top of the trench, water seeping in, or soil sliding under the box, get out and tell the foreman.
Key points
- The box protects you only while you are inside its walls.
- Get in and out with a ladder inside the box.
- Nobody stays in the box while it is set, pulled, or lifted.
- Do not load a box past its rating.
- The box must be set so it cannot shift sideways.
- The open trench past the ends of the box is not protected.
- The competent person checks the walls and the gap under the box before the crew goes back in.
Do this
- Climb out by the ladder every time the box moves.
- Keep fittings and tools inside the box.
- Watch for soil running out from under or behind the box.
- Check the box tag for its depth rating.
- Wait for the competent person's okay before going back in.
Do not do this
- Do not ride in the box or sit on the spreaders while it moves.
- Do not climb the outside of the box to get out.
- Do not stand in the open trench past the end of the box.
- Do not set equipment or spoil where it loads the box past its rating.
- Do not keep working if the walls start to crack or seep.
Talk about it
- Who calls the box move, and how does everyone know it is time to get out?
- Where is the ladder in the box, and is it in the right spot?
